Arudy is an old tanning village. The hides were cleaned in wash houses then treated in a tannery.

In the old days, numerous mills were in activity in the valley, this heritage has almost disappeared with the exception of Aste.

In 1924, the little train in Artouste was built to take workers and materials to the building site of the dam.

The lakes of Bious, Castet, Fabrèges were created as a result of the building of hydro-electric power plants. Today, the power production in the valley is sufficient to supply a town with 40,000 inhabitants.

The church of St James the Great in Béost, the church of St Vivien in Bielle, the church of St Sylvester in Sainte-Colome, the chapel in Gabas, knockers shaped as scallop shells on doors are all reminders that there used to be in the Ossau valley a route leading to Santiago de Compostela.
